Childhood Memories...
There are some dishes that take you back to your childhood. The stressless and free life we once used to have...until we become adults, and ruin everything! This particular dessert ( I'm not sure if it's one... or is it a snack? O.o) is definitely one of them to me. I remember times when my grandmother used to make it for us for chinese new year. The crunchiness of the outer texture combined together with the glutinous rice makes this dish an amazing experience in your mouth. This recipe is actually a re-blog,which I posted a while ago now on my blog.
For the Hakkas, this dessert is called "Tien Nien Neh" (If someone has the exact spelling for this, please send it to me! lol :p). For Mauritians, "Gato Zinzeli". And for the rest of the world... let's see...probably "Glutinous Sweet Potato Balls" (?? LOL).
This is quite a simple recipe, but is ohhh sooo yummy :D
This recipe calls for...
500g Glutinous Flour
500g Sweet Potatoes
Around 3-4 tablespoon of Sugar (To taste of course)
Sesame Seed
Step 1:
Peel and boil the sweet potatoes.
Then, mash the sweet potatoes and add the glutinous flour to make a dough.
Then, roll in into little balls
And roll the balls in sesame seed
It should then look like the picture below...
Step 2:
Deep Fry until golden in colour.
Step 3:
Leave to rest for a few minutes, also to allow the oil to drain.
The best way to eat this is when it's still hot and crispy - with a cup of "guilt-free" chinese tea of your choice...
Keep in an air-tight container if you want to store them away.
What's your favourite childhood dish? :)

Where do you find glutinous flour? I've never heard of it before!
I like this! :D
@Sabby, you should get it in any big supermarket. I just read that you used to live in Oz. If you still are, you should easily find it in Coles or Woolies, in the Flour section. If that doesnt work out, try oriental chinese shops? Im sure they have it there :) Glutinous Flour and Glutinous Rice Flour are the same :D
@day-dreamer, I do too :D

I like gateau zinzli. Both the original (Mauritian version) and those with filling (red bean paste, lotus seed paste).
My grandmother used to make gato zinzeli too. Ahhh, the good old days!
